The salty smell comes from the water with Calcium hydroxide (natural stabilizer) in which the rice and pastas are conserved
Rinse well in a sieve with cold water, or leave the pasta/rice in cold water for 10 minutes, after that rinse good in a sieve. The smell is completely gone! Cook in boiling water for a view minutes or add to your homemade sauce and let it cook for a view minutes, so that the pasta/rice takes the taste of your sauce.
